Workshop: Social Media for Creative Freelancers: Nov 9th!
It’s 2011… do you know where your tweets are?
As independent workers, sometimes just getting the job done takes more hours than there are in the day, and we can forget that it’s important to actually market and promote our businesses, and many are increasingly abandoning more traditional forms of marketing in favor of using social media. But how can social media be effective and best used for your business, and why should you bother? That’s what Work It Brooklyn’s next special event is aiming to answer.
On Wednesday, November 9th at Brooklyn Winery, we are excited to present an intimate panel and networking event geared towards independent workers and small businesses interested in demystifying the buzz around and learning the benefits of social media. The collective experiences and successes of our panelists will offer you insight into how social media and other non-traditional marketing methods can promote and grow your creative business– no matter what you do!

Industry Focus: Music
Work It Brooklyn is super excited to announce our next Industry Focus event (music!), to be held at The Diamond on Wednesday, April 20th.
In our pursuit to bring you the best events we possibly can, we’ve joined forces for Industry Focus: Music with Women In Music. Don’t let the name fool you, Women In Music is an all-inclusive group – with members ranging from music students to industry veterans. Much like Work It Brooklyn, the mission of Women In Music is, at the end of the day, to foster community. Founded in 1985 to advance the awareness, equality, diversity, heritage, opportunities and cultural aspects of the musical arts through education, support, empowerment, and recognition, Women In Music has been doing just that for over twenty-five years.
By working with Women In Music to bring you our Industry Focus: Music event, we’ll be able to bring you panelists from a powerful and vast network of music industry professionals – people you might not get the chance to speak with or learn from otherwise.
We’ll be announcing all the details, including panelists and registration info, really soon so stay tuned to this site!
Great Times!
Last night was a resounding success, over a hundred creatives came to Public Assembly to meet and network, to exchange information and share ideas. We can’t wait to hear about the amazing connections you made (leave ‘em in the comments or email us at workitbrooklyn [at] gmail.com!) through speed networking or simply over drinks.
We also announced that we would be hosting some industry focused events in the coming months. Keep your eyes open for events on music, on writing/publishing, on food, and even more. If you have a suggestion for an industry focused event, please let us know! We want to make sure that everyone gets the most out of Work It Brooklyn as possible!
Special thanks to all those who helped us along the way:
To Sara Bacon of Greenpoint CoWorking for donating not one, but two amazing prizes to our raffle! A free work day in her beautiful space and a free Quickbooks workshop.
To the skint, our media sponsor and partner, for helping spread the word about our event, our group and our mission.
To Lindsey Wengler for taking the photos in the below slide show.
To Sarah Peltier for providing the yummy yummy snacks.
To Public Assembly for hosting our party.
And thanks so much to all of you, who came out and helped to make our second Work It Brooklyn Mix and Mingle event a fantastic success!

We’re Back! The Next Work It Brooklyn is 2/23/2011
That’s right, friends, Work It Brooklyn is back!
We know it’s been awhile since you’ve heard from us, but we are now getting busy revving up for an exciting 2011 for WIB and have set the date for our next big mix-and-mingle event: Wednesday, February 23, from 7 to 10PM. We’ll be at Public Assembly in Williamsburg, where we’ll have plenty of room for speed networking and general excitement.
Register to join the fun at Eventbrite. And while you’re busy clicking links, make sure you migrate over to our new Facebook group to join the discussion and mingle, in advance, with your fellow creatives.
To keep WIB running (to cover operating expenses and to bring you bigger and better events all year long) we will be asking for a suggested donation of $5 at the door, though we will turn no one away. Unless you didn’t register, of course!
Industry Focus: Fashion
On May 13th, Work It Brooklyn hosted our first industry focused event.
The evening started with a panel discussion with our three industry experts: Bob Bland of Brooklyn Royalty and the recently opened Kingdom, Toni Hacker of Hayden Harnett and Elaine La Personerie of Wink PR. The conversation flowed easily amongst the panelists and the audience asked a lot of great questions. The Q&A was followed with an hour long mix’n'mingle where the attendees got to chat and exchange business cards with each other and the experts.
We’d like to thank Bob, Toni and Elaine for participating and helping to make our event such a success
We’d also like to thank everyone who attended the event and, of course, Kingdom for generously hosting this event.
Stay tuned for more Industry Focus events and another big mixer this summer!
Industry Focus: Fashion set for May 12th!
To balance out our larger primary events, Work It Brooklyn is beginning a series of smaller, intimate industry-focused events and May 12th’s FASHION event will kick it all off!
There will be a great panel of local industry self-starters to offer you their insight, help you learn from their experiences, and offer their thoughts on how to “make it” in the fashion and accessory business– whether as a designer, publicist, retailer, publicist, or wherever your path may lead you. Q & A will follow. Submit your questions for our speakers here.
This is a great event for Brooklyn-based (and beyond!) fashion and accessory designers, stylists, fashion writers, producers, students, photographers, publicists, and boutique owners. All participants are strongly encouraged to bring business cards to pass onto all of the new contacts you’ll be making at this event! Feel free to also bring clips or portfolios to share.
REGISTER NOW!
Pre-registration is required and capacity is strictly limited to 45 participants.
THE PANELISTS
Bob Bland, Founder and Brand Director, Brooklyn Royalty
Bob is a professional menswear designer with experience at Triple Five Soul, Rugby by Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Banana Republic. The Brooklyn Royalty line she started is inspired by the fiercely independent spirit and highly individual aesthetic of King’s County residents. The line combines timeless design principles, premium materials and hand-printed graphics that are meant to look and wear better over time.
Toni Hacker , Owner and Creative Director, Hayden Harnett
Working as a designer since 1999, Toni Hacker launched indie fashion company Hayden-Harnett in April of 2005 with her partner Ben Harnett. The brand, known for fine leather goods and women’s apparel, is sold globally and has grown to include two NYC-based retail stores. Big believers in group synergy, the couple launched The Collective Showroom, an incubator and mentoring project for local and emerging designers in September 2009.
Elaine La Personerie
Founder, Wink PR
Wink PR specializes in publicity, marketing and event planning. Clients include fashion/accessories, food, authors, personalities and consumer product brands. Elaine’s experiences in building her own business from the ground up will lend great insight to the panel and guests.

Success!
The first Work It Brooklyn event was a huge success and we couldn’t have done it without you!
Thank you to all the amazing and creative people who attended the premiere Work it Brooklyn event at Kingdom (by the Arsenal)! It was a huge success and that was all because of you. We are so grateful for the amazing energy and positive vibes that flowed through the space and we hope you will all be able to join us for our second edition on Work It Brooklyn!
If you had an amazing success story – met someone to produce that new music video, found a developer for your website, made out in the corner with some hot graphic designer – please let us know! If you had a missed connection – someone you started to speak with, but didn’t get their card/can’t remember their name, etc… check the Virtual Business Cards on the blog. You can e-mail us [workitbrooklyn@gmail.com] or post your story on the Work It Brooklyn Facebook page. There are a ton of photos on the Facebook page, as well – thanks to Lindsay Wengler, Jack Sutter and Stephen Kosloff – make sure to join the group and tag yourself and all your new connections.
We’re sorry we weren’t able to accommodate everyone who was interested in attending our first event. The response was overwhelming – and we’re so glad so many of you were interested in coming! Please send us an e-mail to join our mailing list and get all the info on future events!
We owe a huge thanks to Bob Bland (Brooklyn Royalty, The Arsenal, Kingdom) and Geoff Weber (The Night Owl, Kingdom) for graciously hosting over 100 kooky and creative networkers! We could not have asked for a better environment for our very first (of hopefully many more to come) event.
Thanks again to all of the local businesses that donated raffle prizes: Ladies Who Launch, Hayden Harnett, Brooklyn Oenology, Sit and Read Furniture, Word Brooklyn, Crest Hardware, Gumdrop Cookie Shop, Kombucha Brooklyn, for providing free Kombucha and donating the home brew kit, and Woodside Bakehouse for all the yummy granola bars!
