On Tuesday, November 27, come out and support a community in Brooklyn that is dear to us–Red Hook’s unique businesses, over 30 of which were badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Join us for a night of food, beer, and stories about kitchen mishaps and surviving Hurricane Sandy with Brooklyn chefs. Afterward Work It Brooklyn will lead one of their signature speed networking sessions, this time for food professionals as many in the industry lost their jobs after restaurants were destroyed by the storm. We’ll also have raffle giveaways from local food businesses.

Raffle and ticket sales will benefit ReStore Red Hook, which is helping businesses devastated by Hurricane Sandy (the majority of businesses on their site suffered damages of $50,000 or more, and they need help reaching their goal). Food vendors will also donate 10% of sales to ReStore Red Hook and Brooklyn Brewery will donate a beer token to each guest attending.

Tickets are $15 and include a free beer and one raffle ticket. You can also select “Donate More!” to support ReStore Red Hook even further.

Speakers to date include Allison Robicelli, who helped spearhead relief efforts in Sheepshead Bay and other South Brooklyn neighborhoods and started the Bay Ridge Cares Kitchen to feed Sandy victims; and Leisah Swenson and Monica Byrne of home/made in Red Hook, and also the co-founders of ReStore Red Hook.

More speakers, food vendors, and raffle prizes to be announced soon!

We’ve all been there, working away for hours, focused on only the task at hand – maybe staring at a computer screen as we write, maybe it’s hours bent over jewelry wire, or time spent standing in front of a canvas. And then we look up and realize it’s 4PM and all we’ve eaten all day was that bagel with our morning coffee. That we’ve been in the same position for hours.

Whether you freelance, working from home or coffee shops for multiple clients, or are starting your own business, like so many of the members of Work It Brooklyn, you’re spending a lot of time focused on the business you’re trying to grow. But how much time are you spending focused on yourself?

Our next event, April 18th from 7 to 9PM and graciously hosted by our friends at Human At Ease, is centered on how to stay healthy and well while you are focused on growing your business, and the best way to make all the parts of your life balance while you are doing this. Register here.

We’ll have a discussion, led by our own Aja Marsh, of North Brooklyn Runners, and with panelists including Dishan Elise, a certified personal trainer and the founder/owner of Human At Ease, Kim Ann Curtin, a life coach who is founder and CEO of The Wall Street Coach and Andrea Moss, Holistic Health and Nutrition Coach of Moss Wellness.

Whether you’re working on starting your own business, freelancing from the cramped confines of your studio apartment, or a member of our community with a focus on food, health and wellness, this event will provide answers to achieving a better, healthier, life balance.

We’ll also have our signature speed-networking prior to panel, which will begin at 7:30pm.

Register soon, space is very limited.

Event Details:
Wednesday, April 18 – 7pm to 9pm

It’s 2011… do you know where your tweets are?

As independent workers, sometimes just getting the job done takes more hours than there are in the day, and we can forget that it’s important to actually market and promote our businesses, and many are increasingly abandoning more traditional forms of marketing in favor of using social media. But how can social media be effective and best used for your business, and why should you bother? That’s what Work It Brooklyn’s next special event is aiming to answer.

On Wednesday, November 9th at Brooklyn Winery, we are excited to present an intimate panel and networking event geared towards independent workers and small businesses interested in demystifying the buzz around and learning the benefits of social media. The collective experiences and successes of our panelists will offer you insight into how social media and other non-traditional marketing methods can promote and grow your creative business– no matter what you do!

Tickets for this workshop are $5, please register on our eventbrite page.
